Interviewing Photographer Marisa Alves
The room was loud and everybody was standing, we had been divided into our corresponding groups. Photographers on one side of the room, and the two groups of designers were also divided on opposite ends if the room. Marc yelled, “partner up!” and like a school of fish in a coral reef, we all disbursed ourselves towards each other and around the desk. I yelled out, “who needs a partner?!” From the mass emerged a young lady asking the similar question, “who still needs a partner?”
We met in the middle and introduced ourselves.
Our interview started after we had our lunches.
We found a table and we began our interviewing of each other.
I started by asking, “What is you full name?”
She smiled as she brushed the bit of hair off from her eyebrow, “Marissa Almachar Alves.”
“Do you have a nickname that you would prefer?” I asked.
With a light laugh she replied, “just Marissa Alves.”
“Hi I’m Ismael Beltran but can call me Izzy”
First question, ‘Where did you grow up and how has that affected and/or influenced who you are today?”
With a big grin she said she was from Seattle. This was the place where she was born and raised, but she also mentioned that she would prefer to live in Portugal since most of her family is still there. Marissa had also just arrived from there the Sunday prior (about 5 days from this interview) and was still feeling the jetlag. Marissa told me that even though she has lived here in Seattle for he most part she finds that L.A. is more of an influence to her. Mostly because her cousin is a videographer and he shares his work with her, which in return inspires her to take a similar path in life.
“Why did you choose this photography program?”
“Well, I have always been into photography,” Marissa quickly replied, “that and my high school teacher told me about the program. He kinda pushed me! Especially after I took 3rd place in a jones soda photography contest.
‘That sounds exciting,” I said (talking about the contest)
“It is!” with a big smile on her face.
“Who and/or what were (are) your influences? “
She thought about it for a bit, “Well, for one my teacher”
“The high school one?” I questioned to clarify.
“Yes, him but mainly because of my family”
Marissa went on to say that her family is very artsy and that taking this program and following her dream just felt like the natural thing to do.
“Most interesting thing that happened during your travels?”
“Wow! I travel a lot,” she quickly responded, “I don’t know…. Let me think of something.”
She looked around. I could see her bringing back all those memories of her trips to Europe and South America. She thought about it some more and then she said, “ This one time I almost got electrocuted by a shower in Ecuador”
With shock and disbelief I said, “what? Do tell”Premature ejaculation or erectile dysfunction among men and viagra pills price women. She went on, “ well, there were some wires sticking our by the shower’
And she had not paid much attention to them but they must have been touching some parts of the shower.
“I tried to adjust the shower head,” she reached for an imaginary showerhead above her with both hands, “and it shocked me!”
She had screamed, then jumped out of the shower and ran.
I had no other response than, “WOW!”
“5 items in your bucket list?”
Marissa thought about it for a bit and told me that she had already done the majority of what she had on her bucket list. “Here let me think of new ones… Surfing, NO! Wait, I just did that in Portugal!”
We both laughed.
She then listed her new ones as follows:
1.Scuba dive
2.Go to Fiji
3.Get married
4.Become a Photo Journalist
5.Go on a cruise around the world
“What do you shoot?”
“I shoot people, documentaries, and events” she responded.
“And which is your favorite?” I asked.
“I really like shooting younger people like teens or young adults as they like to be called, “she said with a smile,” but for the most part I like pictures with meaning.”
“What camera you shoot with?”
She went on to talk about her awesome camera and all its cool features. She has a Canon 5D mark III.
“After you are finished with the program, what are your goals or what would you like to do?”
Her face lit up and with a big smile said, “My dream is to work for National Geographic’s and travel around the world. To be more accurate I wish to be a photo-Journal for national Geographic’s.”
I said, “that is an awesome dream,” and wished her best of luck. This concluded our short interview. Marissa is a very cool person, friendly and easy to talk to. She has seen a lot of the world so she has many stories to share.
